Warwick Police Officer Britton Kelly is facing assault charges for allegedly kicking and striking a handcuffed man in the back of a police cruiser during a domestic violence incident.

Domestic Violence Arrest Leads to Charges Against Warwick Police Veteran, Sgt. Britton Kelly, for Alleged Assault on Handcuffed Man in Cruiser

A 17-year veteran police officer from Warwick, Sgt. Britton Kelly, faces charges of misdemeanor simple assault following an incident in which he allegedly kicked and struck a handcuffed man seated in the back of a police cruiser. The authorities made the announcement on Thursday, jointly addressed by State Attorney General Peter Neronha and Warwick Police Chief Col. Bradford Connor.

During the occurrence on July 15, Sgt. Britton Kelly and fellow officers were responding to a domestic violence incident, which led to the arrest of a woman. While effecting the arrest, the woman’s husband intervened physically, prompting the officers to detain him as well. Subsequently, the man was placed in the rear of a police vehicle with a seat belt secured.

Investigation Finds Sgt. Britton Kelly Accused of Forcefully Removing Handcuffed Man from Police Cruiser After Allegedly Striking Him

According to AP News, Sgt. Britton Kelly then approached the police vehicle and allegedly kicked the man in the head before striking him in the face. He then forcibly removed the man from the cruiser. Following established protocol, the city police reported the incident to the attorney general’s office, which investigated the matter.

Sgt. Britton Kelly was arraigned in district court and was released on personal recognizance, refraining from entering a plea, as is customary during such proceedings. The accused officer’s attorney has not yet commented on the case. Meanwhile, Sgt. Britton Kelly has been suspended with pay pending the resolution of the charges. He is scheduled to appear in court again on August 10th.
