Officials in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, have suspended the search for a 9-month-old baby named Conrad Sheils, who, along with his mother and 2-year-old sister, was swept away in a violent flash flood earlier in the month. According to USA Today, the tragedy occurred when fast-rising floodwaters engulfed the family’s car near the Delaware River, resulting in six fatalities. Conrad had been missing since July 15, and after an exhaustive search, authorities announced on their Facebook page that they were unable to locate him.
The family was on their way to a family outing when the creek’s banks swelled and submerged the roadways. Conrad and his sister, Matilda “Mattie” Sheils, were separated from their family members while attempting to escape the flash flood. Conrad’s mother, Katie Seley, 32, was confirmed dead a day after the incident. Her husband, mother, and 4-year-old son were able to safely escape.

Community Mourns and Vows to Remember: Multiple Agencies’ Exhaustive Search Fails to Locate Missing Baby Conrad as Sister’s Tragic Fate Confirmed in Pennsylvania Flood
The search efforts involved multiple agencies, including marine units, divers, K-9 teams, and equipment from various neighboring regions. Despite their best efforts, Conrad remained unaccounted for. As reported in NBC News, a week prior to suspending the search for Conrad, Mattie was found floating in the Delaware River, approximately 32 miles south of where she was last seen. The Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office subsequently verified her passing as an accidental drowning.
The loss of Conrad and his family members has deeply impacted the community, and authorities expressed their gratitude for the support and assistance provided during the search efforts. While Conrad could not be reunited with his family, the community vows to keep his memory alive, acknowledging the heartbreak and sadness that lingers after this devastating incident.
