Space Force Mission Redefined: A Guardian-Driven Approach Shapes Nine-Word Statement

The United States Space Force has unveiled a concise and revamped mission statement, succinctly encapsulating its core purpose. According to a published article in Space, the new Space Force mission statement, consisting of just nine words, declares the Space Force’s commitment to “Secure our Nation’s interests in, from, and to space.” This streamlined Space Force mission statement was developed in a unique manner, devoid of corporate marketing teams or high-ranking military officials deliberating around a table. Instead, it was shaped through the contributions of Space Force servicemembers, known as Guardians, in a process led by Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman.

The new Space Force mission statement succinctly outlines the Space Force’s primary functions. “In space” pertains to the operation of satellites and spacecraft in Earth’s orbit, aimed at safeguarding American space infrastructure from potential threats like anti-satellite weapons. “From space” encompasses the protection and utilization of critical space-based assets, including GPS navigation satellites, communication networks, and early missile launch warning systems. Lastly, “to space” signifies the Space Force’s responsibility to ensure that the United States maintains access to Earth’s orbit through rocket launches and the supporting infrastructure.

Streamlined Space Force Mission: A Response to Criticism of Verbose Statement

This new Space Force mission statement comes in the wake of criticism directed at the previous, more verbose statement. According to Air and Space Forces, Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman had expressed concerns that the old mission statement failed to effectively convey the Space Force’s vital role and was challenging for Guardians to articulate. The prior Space Force mission was laden with military jargon, describing the Space Force’s role in organizing, training, and equipping Guardians for global space operations, while also providing decision-makers with military options to achieve national objectives. The shift towards a concise and comprehensible mission statement reflects the Space Force’s commitment to clarity and efficiency in its mission.
