Stabbing Suspect Captured In NYC Has Been Returned To NEPA

A stabbing suspect captured in New York City has been returned to NEPA.

A man who was wanted for an alleged stabbing in Scranton has been apprehended in New York City and brought back to Northeast PA. According to local reports, the suspect was arrested in New York City before being extradited back to Scranton to face charges.

According to the Scranton Police Department, Waliek Shakur Vereen, a 26-year-old resident of the 1300 block of Prospect Avenue, has been charged with stabbing a man twice in his stomach using a pocketknife on July 6.

The officers took to Facebook to request assistance from the public in locating Vereen. Thanks to their prompt action, the U.S. Marshals Service was able to get involved in the investigation within the next day.

After pursuing Vereen, the authorities located him in New York City. The police apprehended Vereen and subsequently handed him over to the Scranton detectives on Wednesday.

According to reports, Vereen has been charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and harassment. As of now, he is being held at the Lackawanna County Prison and has a bail amount of $150,000.

The court has set a preliminary hearing for Thursday at 9:00 a.m.
