Rottweiler Vs Presa Canario; The Perpetual Difference Between The Two

Rottweiler vs. Presa Canario: Differences Between Rottweiler and Presa Canario.

At first glance, the Rottweiler and Presa Canario may appear similar due to their strong and muscular builds. However, upon closer examination, it is evident that they are not the same breed.

When considering one of these dogs, it’s important to look at their significant differences. Below, we’ll explore some of the most notable ones.

1. Origin

The origin of a dog greatly affects its temperament and health as breeding influences both the appearance and behavior of the dog.

The Germans bred Rottweilers to herd cattle and guard them. Eventually, their guarding instincts were utilized to protect homes and people, making them popular as guardians. Nowadays, Rottweilers are primarily used for protection

The Presa Canario, originating from the Canary Islands, has a different climate than Germany. Despite this, they were utilized similarly to German dogs for guarding livestock, but not for herding.

2. Size

Presa Canarios are smaller than Rottweilers. A male Rottweiler can weigh up to 135 pounds, while a female weighs up to 100 pounds. On the other hand, a male Presa Canarios can weigh up to 130 pounds, and a female can only reach 110.

Rottweilers have a larger size difference, with males weighing as little as 95 pounds compared to Presa Canarios males that weigh a minimum of 110 pounds.

Rottweilers may weigh more or less than Presa Canarios.

3. Appearance

Rottweilers have a strong, muscular build and are recognized by their distinctive black coat with tan markings on their face, chest, legs, and paws. They were originally bred for guarding livestock and property, which explains their imposing appearance.

Presa Canarios have a muscular and stocky build, with coarse coats that come in fawn, brindle, and black. Unlike Rottweilers, they have a wider range of colors and lack the distinctive tan markings. Although slightly more compact, they can still reach a substantial size and are not as imposing as Rottweilers.

4. Temperament

Rottweilers are known for being loyal and confident, with strong guarding instincts that make them excellent guard dogs. However, without proper socialization and training, these instincts can lead to behavioral issues and even aggression. It’s important to ensure that Rottweilers are raised and socialized well to prevent such issues.

Presa Canarios are reserved and aloof, but they bond closely with their owners rather than strangers. Early socialization and training are necessary to prevent potential behavioral issues.

Both dogs require socialization for their well-being and behavior. Enroll them in puppy classes and expose them to public settings regularly.

5. Exercise

Both these dogs require regular exercise as they were bred to work all day. Without physical activity, they can get bored and become destructive. If you decide to have them as companions, make sure to take them out for exercise a minimum of twice a day.

Rottweilers are generally more energetic than Presa Canarios, although there are individual variations. It’s essential to note that both breeds require a substantial amount of exercise.

6. Training

Since both breeds are intelligent, they can be easily trained. They possess protective instincts that demand proper guidance through training. It is crucial to educate these dogs about what constitutes a threat and what does not.

Rottweilers are generally easier to train and manage due to their breeding purpose of working closely with humans, resulting in a more obedient nature. On the other hand, Presa Canarios were primarily bred to guard flocks, making them a bit more difficult to train.

7. Guarding Instincts

People bred both Rottweilers and Presa Canarios to protect livestock. However, the Presa Canario is more prone to this behavior. These dogs were only bred for guarding, and they haven’t undergone much modern selective breeding to manage this behavior.

The Rottweiler is now a popular breed kept as companion animals and was used for herding, resulting in reduced guarding instincts.

8. Health

These purpose-bred dogs are healthy and vital for livestock assistance. Throughout their history, health has been a crucial aspect, especially for the Presa Canario breed.

Rottweilers are commonly bred for show and companionship rather than work, leading to a higher chance of health issues. To ensure a healthy Rottweiler, it is crucial to buy your puppy from a reputable breeder who offers health guarantees. Beware of puppy mills and backyard breeders who prioritize profits over the wellbeing of their dogs.
