Nicole Mari Wobbeking, 49, was initially arrested on July 29 for misdemeanor domestic assault and homicide charges after pushing her mother, Sheila May Wobbeking, down the stairs during a dispute over unpaid rent at their home in Maple Grove. However, the homicide charges were swiftly upgraded to assault in the third degree when it was discovered that the elderly victim had sustained a broken bone. Now, with the victim tragically passing away from a pulmonary embolism caused by the attack, detectives are urging for further homicidecharges to be laid. According to reports, the altercation between mother and daughter turned deadly when Nicole Wobbeking used “a can of unopened pasta sauce” to inflict severe injuries to her mother’s ribs and hips. Despite managing to stand up on her own and leave the house with her granddaughter to call for help, Sheila Wobbeking succumbed to her injuries on July 5 at her residence in nearby Plymouth. Following her passing, authorities from Plymouth informed the Maple Grove Police Department, leading to the investigation’s new direction and the request for homicide charges.

The criminal complaint for the homicide charges alleges that Nicole Wobbeking admitted to pushing her mother down the stairs and justified her actions by claiming her mother was her landlord and had entered the residence without permission. The victim’s obituary portrays her as a generous and loving soul, known for her dry wit and unwavering support for family and friends, as well as her dedication to community service. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner has now determined the cause of death to be a homicide, directly linked to the broken ankle Sheila Wobbeking sustained during the brutal attack. As the homicide charges case unfolds, Maple Grove Police Commander Jon Wetternach has confirmed that a decision on the homicide charges is currently pending. The community remains shocked and mourns the loss of Sheila Wobbeking, a woman cherished for her kindness and compassion. Legal proceedings are expected to progress as authorities seek justice for this tragic and senseless incident.
