Gunman Sparks Massive Woodside Standoff

The NYPD still is investigating a shooting in Woodside last Wednesday in which a man allegedly wounded the superintendent of his apartment building.

A subsequent three-hour standoff with police ended after the suspected gunman, who had barricaded himself in his sixth-floor unit, allegedly shot and wounded himself.

Both men are expected to recover.

The incident began at around 10:50 a.m. according to NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey in a 2:15 p.m. press conference that can be viewed online at nypdnews.com.

Maddrey said the first two uniformed officers from the 114th Precinct to arrive at 31-31 54 St. encountered the victim.

“He informed the officers that he had been shot,” Maddrey said. “He gave the officers a little information about what happened.”

He also told the officers that the person who shot him lived in the building.

As the officers headed up to the sixth floor, the suspect allegedly fired gunshots out of his apartment window.

The man came out of his apartment as the cops reached the sixth floor, with one of them firing three shots at the suspect but not hitting him.

The man then barricaded himself inside.

As the victim was taken to an area hospital, police Special Services and members of the Strategic Response Group arrived shortly afterward.

Officers evacuated some residents from the building for their safety and kept others in place.

“Bullets can go through walls,” Maddrey said. “Bullets can go through windows.”

Meanwhile, police established contact with the man, and were trying to get a look in the apartment with drone-mounted cameras when they heard a gunshot from inside.

Maddrey said a camera revealed that the man was on the floor and calling for help.

He was still holding his firearm as officers entered. The man was taken to an area hospital.
