Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Political Future in Limbo: Arrested and Convicted for Asset Concealment, Potential Disqualification from Politics Looms
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s political future hangs in the balance after his recent arrest at his Lahore home. According to The Washington Times, a court sentenced him to three years in jail for asset concealment, a conviction that could lead to his disqualification from politics under the country’s laws. Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), condemned the ruling and plans to challenge it in a higher court. However, it is the election body that holds the authority to ultimately disqualify him from politics, as reported.
The report stated that this is not the first time the popular opposition leader has faced legal trouble; since his ouster through a vote of no-confidence in April 2022, he has become involved in over 150 legal cases. Reports said that charges against Prime Minister Imran Khan include corruption, terrorism, and incitement to violence during deadly protests in May, where his followers attacked government and military property.

Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb denied any connection between Prime Minister Imran Khan’s arrest and the upcoming elections, asserting that he had ample opportunities to defend himself against the asset concealment charges.
Despite his ouster, Prime Minister Imran Khan remains a leading opposition figure in Pakistan.
