Justice Served as Attorney Considers Victims’ Families in Death Penalty Decision

State Attorney Jack Campbell, in an interview with the Tallahassee Democrat, revealed that his office carefully evaluated various factors and spent time with the families of the victims to ensure justice was served. Campbell acknowledged the gravity of the crimes committed and emphasized that they do warrant the death penalty. However, he emphasized the importance of engaging in serious conversations and ultimately concluded that justice was indeed served.

According to the published article in HuffPost, Glee, who pleads guilty, was reported on June 6, 2020. Salau approached the Tallahassee police, disclosing that she had been sexually assaulted by an individual who had offered her a ride to his residence and a place to stay. Shortly after the incident, Salau, a community college student, took to Twitter to share her traumatic experience. She detailed being molested by a black man who eventually pleaded guilty in Tallahassee, Florida, while trying to find shelter and collect her belongings from a church where she sought refuge due to unfavorable living conditions.

Although the police determined Salau had experienced battery, she was unable to immediately provide them with the location of the crime. Later that day, she met Glee at a bus stop, and he offered her a place to shower and rest. Salau’s mother reported her missing two days later, on June 8, prompting local activists and law enforcement to launch a search. Disturbingly, an activist group received a threatening message on June 11 from someone claiming to be holding Salau hostage and intending to harm her.

Salau and Sims were reported missing, and their bodies were discovered days later. Sims had been reported missing after a family friend became worried and asked for a wellness check. Police found signs of a burglary at Sims’ home, and her car was missing. They tracked Sims’ phone to Glee’s home, where they found the victims. Salau was wearing the same clothes she had on when she last spoke with the police.

Glee, who pleads guilty, was arrested in West Palm Beach after purchasing a bus ticket. He was taken to a hospital due to breathing difficulties, where he admitted to meeting Salau and bringing her home. Glee admitted to imprisoning, tying up, and sexually assaulting Salau multiple times for several days. Initially pleading not guilty, Glee later entered into a plea agreement. His formal sentencing is scheduled for September.

The tragic events surrounding Salau’s disappearance and death have brought attention to the violence faced by Black women. Salau’s friends mourned her online, remembering her as an activist who fought against injustice. The case highlights the need for awareness and action to address the challenges and dangers that Black women experience.
