George Legere, 75, of Springfield, Massachusetts, faced charges of first-degree kidnapping and rape case was convicted by a state jury in Hartford back in May. The rape case sentencing was announced by Hartford State’s Attorney Sharmese Walcott on July 21. The victim, whose life was forever altered by the heinous rape case, endured a traumatic ordeal when she was assaulted on the early morning of April 13, 1984. Authorities found her bound, naked, and in distress inside her vehicle with the horn blaring in Avon. She miraculously survived the harrowing rape case assault. The assailant, George Legere, had forcibly abducted her as she was exiting her apartment complex, blindfolded her, and bound her arms before taking her to another location where he subjected her to brutal physical assault.
DNA testing brought a long-dormant rape case back to the forefront
Justice for the rape case victim, however, was not swift. Despite DNA evidence being collected at the scene of the crime, authorities were unable to identify a suspect at the time. It wasn’t until 2021 that the breakthrough occurred. The state crime lab’s notification to the Avon police about a DNA match between the evidence and Legere’s DNA from a sample taken upon his release from a Massachusetts prison led to his arrest and eventual conviction for kidnapping. Unfortunately, due to the statute of limitations expiring, specific sexual assault charges for the rape case could not be pursued. Nevertheless, the 25-year prison sentence offers some measure of closure for the victim and serves as a stern reminder that justice can prevail even after decades of eluding capture. George Legere’s extensive criminal record spanning multiple decades, including prior convictions for sexual assault, kidnapping, and negligent homicide, reinforces the importance of putting violent offenders behind bars to protect society and provide a sense of safety for survivors.
