Child Abuse Case: Heart-Wrenching Death of 5-Year-Old Boy Leads to Charges Against Adoptive Mother and Corrections Officer Husband

In a heart-wrenching case, an adoptive mother and her husband, who works as a corrections officer, are facing charges related to the death of a 5-year-old boy who suffered from severe blunt force trauma and passed away in February. As reported by True Crime Daily, the Westmoreland County District Attorney, Nicole Ziccarelli, revealed the charges on July 28. Lauren Maloberti, the adoptive mother, is accused of criminal homicide, first-degree murder, endangering the welfare of children, two counts of aggravated assault of a child, and criminal conspiracy. Her husband, Jacob Maloberti, is facing charges of criminal homicide, endangering the welfare of children, two counts of aggravated assault, and criminal conspiracy.

Reports said that the victim, Landon Maloberti, was found unconscious and was taken to Allegheny Health Network Hempfield on January 30. Subsequently, he was transferred to Children’s Hospital for medical care, but sadly, he succumbed to his injuries on February 7. The District Attorney’s Office reported that the young boy had sustained blunt force trauma to his head, neck, torso, and extremities, along with evidence of bruising in different stages of healing. A physician determined that Landon had experienced multiple episodes of physical abuse, combined with emotional maltreatment, as reported.

The report also included that the boy’s injuries caused immense suffering and impairment, including the inability to stand, eat, or drink, and loss of consciousness. The Medical Examiner from Allegheny County classified his death as a homicide. Disturbingly, the suspects allegedly delayed seeking medical help for Landon, and the adoptive mother even downplayed his condition, attributing it to the after-effects of COVID. Reports also indicate that Lauren Maloberti openly expressed animosity towards her adopted son, calling him “hard to love” to her co-workers.

True Crime Daily also reported that there were text messages exchanged between the suspects from April 2022 to February 2023, revealing their disdain for the victim. The boy’s maternal grandmother had suspected abuse as early as April 2022, when she was denied access to her grandson, allegedly because he was labeled as “bad” by his mother. Furthermore, the tragic circumstances surrounding Landon’s short life have deeply shaken the community, with the intention of prosecuting the case in a manner befitting the dignity and honor he deserves. Authorities and the Delmont Police Department expressed their shock and sorrow over the devastating incident, emphasizing that they had never encountered such a harrowing case during their tenure.
