A TEEN suspected of stabbing his 5-year-old brother, his dad and his dad’s girlfriend was reportedly “hearing voices” before their brutal deaths.
Jayden Rivera, 19, was babysitting his younger half-brother while his dad and girlfriend were out on a date before they were found dead in their New York apartment building on Sunday.
Rivera was being held at the psychiatric ward of Westchester Medical Center, where he told medical staff that he “did something bad and that he had killed somebody,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told reporters during a news briefing on Tuesday.
He added that the teen had also told his mother prior to the stabbings that “he was hearing voices.”
Investigators are now working on gathering probable cause and expect to charge Rivera with the murders of his dad Jonathan Rivera, his dad’s girlfriend, Hanoi Peralta, and the couple’s little boy, Kayden Rivera.
Kenny said neighbors heard someone screaming the Lord’s Prayer in Spanish and a man and woman screaming around 2am on Sunday.
Police who were responding to a 911 call found Jonathan Rivera, 38, in a pool of blood in the first-floor hallway of their Mott Haven apartment building around 6:40am.
Police then found Hanoi Peralta, 33, lying dead in a bedroom with multiple stab wounds.Start slideshow
She was found on an air mattress with her 5-year-old son who appeared to be stabbed once in the chest and eight times in the torso.
Police sources said blood-covered Rivera showed up at his mom’s Bronx apartment later that evening where she called 911.
“Later on, when he returned home, he stated to his mother again that he was hearing voices,” the detective said.
“He thought that Mr. Rivera and Ms. Peralta were going to hurt him,” Kenny added.
He was reportedly brought to Westchester Medical Center by EMS, though sources say he was expected to be transferred to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan.
Rivera was being held at the psychiatric ward of Westchester Medical Center.
Jayden Rivera is a student at SUNY Oswego. He had earned a scholarship to the state school.
Jonathan Rivera also had two older daughters who currently reside in Connecticut.
