Killer of Gilgo Beach is born
In 2010, as authorities were looking for Shannan Gilbert, a 23-year-old New Jersey woman who had gone missing on Long Island, the bodies of four women were discovered in burlap sacks 500 feet apart close to a parkway along Gilgo Beach on Jones Beach Island, a barrier island on the South Shore. The officials determined that Megan Waterman, 22, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Amber Lynn Costello, 27, had all been strangled to death.
In addition to Gilbert’s body, the remains of four other persons, including a female toddler and two other women, were also found in the remote region between 2010 and 2011. Gilbert’s body was located in 2011. Authorities have long believed that some of those atrocities were the work of a single serial killer, even if it is still unclear whether or how any of those crimes are connected.
Five victims were prostitutes who had posted Craigslist ads for escort services at the time of their killings, according to a report by Prater and Danner.

Gilgo Beach serial killer’s end
The law enforcement announced the conclusion of an extensive police investigation into Rex Heuermann’s Long Island home on Tuesday. The backyard was destroyed during the search for evidence, and a basement vault containing hundreds of weapons that belonged to the man who is thought to have executed at least three women more than ten years ago was found.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney stated at a press conference outside the Massapequa Park residence where Heuermann resided with his wife and two children that police had discovered a “tremendous quantity of evidence” amid the investigation.
