STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The national Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, otherwise known as SNAP, will increase in October, according to a report by AL.com.
Based on the cost of living adjustment, SNAP benefits will increase by an average of slightly more than 3% for 12 months, beginning Oct. 1.
A family of four could see benefits increase from $939 to $973 a month, the report said.
Here are the new benefit amounts based on family size from the U.S. Department of Agriculture:
- One-person household: $291
- Two-person household: $535
- Three-person household: $766
- Four-person household: $973
- Five-person household: $1,155
- Six-person household $1,386
- Seven-person household: $1,532
- Eight-person household: $1,751
The Advance/SILive.com recently reported that there were new rules for SNAP, which require able-bodied 50-year-olds to work if they want to maintain their benefits, with the age threshold set to increase again in the near future.
However, New York SNAP beneficiaries have more time before the new rules take effect.
As of Sept. 1, able-bodied adults without dependents between ages 18 and 50 need to prove they were employed or in a job training program for at least 80 hours per month to qualify for the benefits in other areas of the country, the Advance reported.
Previously, the age threshold only extended to 49 years old.
The age requirement in other places will expand again to 52 years old starting Oct. 1, and to 54 years old starting Oct. 1, 2024.
Residents are exempt from the able-bodied adults without dependents work requirements if they are:
- Unable to work due to a physical or mental limitation
- Pregnant
- Have someone under 18 in your SNAP household
- Excused from the SNAP general work requirements
- A veteran
- Experiencing homelessness
- Age 24 or younger and in foster care on your 18th birthday
