Amidst Global Security Concerns LAUSD’s Carvalho and Schmerelson allow Unsecured Access to Schools.
LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and School Board member Scott Schmerelson are allowing LAUSD Region North Principals to ignore the District’s Student Safety Policy. LAUSD schools in Region North have adopted an open-access policy, leaving schools unsafe and open to the General Public.
The aftermath of the Hamas terrorist strike on Israel has left thousands of people dead and both Israeli and Palestinian parents mourning the death of their children. It has also led the threats against the Jewish community.
The 24-hour global news cycle has reported countless stories about the lack of preparedness and arrogance of the Israeli Government and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) that should have easily thwarted the attack on Israel from Hamas that took the lives of over 1000 people.
It should not be a surprise to anyone that an act of terrorism of this magnitude, was a possibility, and likely inevitable.
October 13, 2023, was Global Jihad Day. The simplest explanation of Jihad Day is as day that Hamas has called for the ridding of the earth to Jewish People.
On October 7th the Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho Tweeted:
Ground Schools, Synagogues, and centers of Jewish life after social media posts have indicated potential acts of terror against Jews on a global scale, at least one Los Angeles Unified School District Charter School has decided that they will not cower to rumors of security threats to the Jewish community and maintain the school’s commitment to the full “Full Public Access” to the school.
The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services Director Nancy Ward has stated: ““As California’s Homeland Security Agency, we are actively monitoring the developing situation in Israel and Gaza and closely coordinating with our security partners to track potential impacts on the domestic threat environment.
“The situation remains dynamic and evolving. I continue to actively brief the Governor on the current situation and state intelligence and law enforcement officials are working around the clock to safeguard the safety and security of all Californians.
According to Principal Greenberg at Pomelo Community Charter, a school overseen by Scott Schmerelson, many parents at Pomelo Community Charter are opposed to securing the school and would prefer that the campus be open to the general public.
This is particularly relevant and concerning within the context of the current conflict in the Middle East as LAUSD’s Pomelo Community School is located in San Fernando’s West Valley, an area of Los Angeles with a large Jewish and Israeli population, surrounded by several synagogues.
On October 11, 2023, Greenberg following the attacks on Israel by Hamas, Greenberg sent a letter to All Pomelo Community School Parents and Faculty stating “We are aware of messages that are circulating on social media regarding possible non-specific threats in communities across the nation and worldwide” acknowledging Los Angeles Unified School District is aware of the situation.
Despite global efforts to increase security around schools and centers of Jewish life, Greenberg has opted not to conform at to leave gates to her school open and accessible to “All That Wish to Enter.” Photos taken as recently as October 12, 2023 gates at Pomelo Community Charter unattended and open for ingress and egress allowing access to any member of the general public to Pomelo Community Charter School facility while students are on campus.
The fact that the school has unsecured gates and entrances could have dire consequences for the Students at Pomelo. Under normal circumstances, the General Public, including sex offenders, Fentanyl Dealers, and individuals experiencing homelessness, have unobstructed access to the Pomelo Community School Campus. Now, anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic extremists also have full access to the Pomelo Community Charter Campus and its high concentration of Jewish and Israeli Students.
At the Los Angeles School District and Los Angeles School District School Board, there seems to be little concern about Pomelo Community Charter’s “Open Access to the General Public” practices. This is concerning as LAUSD Board Member is now running for re-election. Nor is there any concern about the fact that Greenberg is surrendering to the will of her staff and parents rather than prioritizing safety at Pomelo Community Charter.
