Parts of Spain: Two people die as a result of flooding
Record-breaking amounts of rain dumped on the Madrid region that are parts of Spain over the weekend, creating flooding, postponing a soccer match in the Spanish league, and apparently resulting in at least two fatalities, according to authorities.
After record rainfall caused severe flooding in central parts of Spain, closing roads, subway lines, and high-speed train services, at least two people have died and three are missing. Emergency services reported on Monday that helicopters were dispatched to Toledo, which is located 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of Madrid, to rescue people who had taken refuge on their homes’ roofs.
The torrential deluge on Sunday and into early Monday converted roadways into rivers of mud that swept away cars, vans, and waste bins across Madrid, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, and Valencia areas. Hail also fell in various areas.
Flooding, trapped traffic, and heavy rain in some parts of Spain
The weather phenomena, known as the “DANA” (the Spanish abbreviation for “isolated high-level depression”), started on Sunday afternoon in some parts of Spain and persisted through the night.
Residents in some parts of Spain like Madrid received text messages from the emergency services telling them to stay at home and refrain from driving. According to Spain’s national train company, all lines between Madrid and Valencia’s eastern coast have been shut down.
