Intensified Search at Gilgo Beach Serial Killings Suspect’s Home as Police Deploy Canine and Radar
Authorities have been intensifying their search efforts at the residence of Rex Heuermann, the suspect in the Gilgo Beach serial killings. CNN affiliate News 12 Long Island reported that over the weekend, a police dog and ground-penetrating radar were employed to aid in the search. On Sunday, the authorities proceeded to excavate Heuermann’s backyard using a backhoe. However, there has been no disclosure regarding any discoveries made at the property during this time.
CNN reached out to both the police and the district attorney seeking details about the Gilgo beach killings and the ongoing home search, but no response has been received yet. According to a law enforcement source, it may take another two to three days to complete the search of Heuermann’s residence, as the attic and garage still need to be thoroughly examined, despite the basement being already searched.
Gilgo Beach Suspect’s Backyard Under Investigation; Heuermann Pleads Not Guilty to Murders
Investigators in Gilgo beach are also considering the possibility of someone or something being buried in the backyard and may conduct further technical work to verify this. So far, police dogs on the premises have not found any evidence. The suspect, Rex Heuermann, was arrested in New York City and charged with the murders of three of the “Gilgo Four” women, whose remains were discovered near Long Island’s Gilgo Beach in 2010. He maintains his innocence and pleads not guilty to the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Lynn Costello. This was reported in Aol News.
Though Heuermann is also the main suspect in the disappearance and death of the fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, he has not been charged in connection with that case. Investigators have been working under the belief that the Gilgo beach killings occurred in Heuermann’s home in Massapequa Park, New York, a few miles away from where the victims’ remains were found. The timing of the disappearances coincided with periods when Heuermann’s family was away, leading investigators to suspect he may have lured victims to his Long Island home in Gilgo beach, where he lived with his wife, daughter, and stepson. The choice of his home as the crime scene of Gilgo beach killings could have provided Heuermann with control over the environment and access to materials found at the crime scene, such as tape and burlap bags, as per a source involved in the investigation.
