Robert Shivers, 18, who lives on Terrace Avenue in Hempstead, was pulled over yesterday in Franklin Square for an ordinary traffic stop driving down Hempstead Turnpike near Scherer Blvd., in a Hyundai Sonata, about 5:02pm.
According to police, Shivers initially stopped the car and appeared to be cooperating. But when police began to approach him as he was sitting in the Hyundai, he allegedly put the pedal to the metal and tore down the street, south, speeding down Scherer Blvd.
He was near Franklin Avenue, police say, when he lost control of the car and collided with multiple cars that were parked on Scherer Blvd.
Cops say Shivers didn’t stick around. They say he jumped out of the Hyundai and tried to run.
But he was injured in the crash. Police apprehended him and he was taken into custody “after a brief struggle”, treated by EMTs and taken to a local area hospital Emergency Room.
Meantime, police say, they searched the Hyundai and found one firearm, a Ruger 57 semi-automatic handgun loaded with 6 bullets.
Shivers has been charged with 2nd and 3rd degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon — both Felonies — and Resisting Arrest along with multiple traffic violations. He is scheduled to be arraigned in his hospital bed “when medically practical”.
