Floridians who are looking for a sweet treat don’t necessarily have to look too far. Dairy Queen, The Magic Cow in Davy, and Jaxson’s Ice Cream in Dania Beach are some examples of options.
Floridians in South Florida will have one less option, though, as a popular sweets shop closed due to financial issues.
About Rita’s Ice: This chain began in 1984 by a former firefighter who named a small ice cream shop after his wife. Eventually, the store would expand dramatically, and it is now available in 30 states, and it has around 500 stores, according to the company’s website and LinkedIn.
The company offers Italian ice, custard, and gelati. The franchise was named one of the Top 25 Franchise High Performers by the Wall Street Journal, according to the company’s LinkedIn.
What Happened In Florida?: According to Tap Into Coral Springs reporting in September of 2023, the company took to social media and posted that it would shut its University Drive location, writing in part:
“We tried our best to hang in there but it’s just not enough. We will sourly miss the love and support we got from this Community and encourage all of our fans to stop in one last time to say goodbye.”
The publication wrote that there was allegedly a note on the front door from the landlord that indicated that the restaurant was allegedly indebted $13,147 on rent.
According to The Sun, the social media message only gave days in warning of the closure.
Feedback From The Coral Springs Rita’s Location: Yelp Reviewers for the Coral Springs location give Rita’s 4.2 out of 5 stars with many complimenting the variety, flavor combinations, and staff.
A reviewer named Harvey had this to say:
“Rita’s is always awesome. They have great Italian ice and gelato and usually have a bunch of different flavors. The staff is usually friendly. The location in Coral Springs was no exception. My son ended up not liking the mint chocolate chip ice cream and thus, they gave him another flavor for free. This was a really nice gesture This location was also really clean and nicely laid out. I tried the peach Italian ice and was good. We will keep coming back to Rita’s.”
