According to Allied Van Lines, Florida is a popular destination for people from Detroit.
In light of that data, it’s a fair bet that there are some Floridians from Detroit who might enjoy some Detroit-style pizza, which, according to Doreen’s Pizzeria, has a crust that is similar to focaccia.
There’s a chain restaurant opening in Florida that might fit that bill for those migrating (or who have previously moved) from Detroit to Florida or for those who like thick-crust pizzas.
What’s So Special About Emmy Squared?: In a review by Bon Apetit in 2016, the publication called the restaurant’s pizza one of the “best new pies of the year,” and it called the restaurant’s chicken sandwich one of the 5 best-fried chicken sandwiches in the country that year.
The first store opened in 2016 and there are currently 20 locations, according to the company’s website.
According to Eater.com, the pizza is made with focaccia dough that proofs for 48 hours. Slices have a thick, blackened edge due to the dough curling up.
The New Store – The First In Florida: Emmy Squared has its first Florida location on North Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale. It opened in late November of 2023. A Cape Coral location is expected to follow in 2024.
Emmy Squared Pizza CEO Howard Greenstone told The South Florida Journal:
“The newest location in Fort Lauderdale perfectly blends the company’s Brooklyn roots with the coastal vibe of the city, and its menu offerings perfectly reflect the spirit of South Florida.”
Is It Reasonably Priced?: According to the online menu, most pies are priced from $18-$26, depending upon toppings. Sandwiches run around $15. A Caesar salad is $9.99.
What Do Fort Lauderdale Patrons Say?: Google reviewers gave Emmy Squared 4.7 out of 5 stars, and although the food got high praise, the service was almost always mentioned as well.
