Nassau Cops Arrest Woman Who Had Lied To DMV On License Application

Xuanzhi Liu never had a Canadian driver’s license. But that’s not what she told the DVM.

Police say that Liu, who lives in Brooklyn, filled out New York State DMV Form MV-44 on February 18, 2021 — more than 2 1/2 years ago — and handed it in to the Department of Motor Vehicles on Hempstead Turnpike in Bethpage. On the form, it asks: Did you ever have a driver license that is valid or that expired within the last 2 years issued by a Canadian Province?” Cops say Liu, age 45, falsely checked the YES box.

But that’s not all she did, say cops.

After allegedly lying about a valid license in Canada, cops say Liu gave the DMV a fake Ontario driver’s license to prove it.

Form MV-44 warns, near the signature line: I understand that making a false statement on this application may be punishable as a criminal offense.

At this point, police say, Liu had signed, sealed, and delivered a fraudulent “Application for Driver License” asking New York officials “to transfer what was purported to be an existing Ontario driver license number L3600-13437-50228 for a New York State Driver License”, a Nassau County Detective says in a sworn court filing.

Lying on DMV paperwork is a crime. Submitting a fake Canadian license to boost the odds of getting away with it is another crime. But simply having these phony forms in your possession is a Felony all by itself.

She almost got away with it. But yesterday — 2 years, 7 months, 3 days later — Xuanzhi Liu was arrested by the Nassau County Police and charged with three (3) Felony crimes:

  • Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument under Penal Law 170.25
  • Falsifying Business Records to commit a crime under Penal Law 175.10
  • Filing a False Instrument with intent to defraud under Penal Law 175.35-01

She pleaded Not Guilty.

Judge Marie McCormack released Liu, but requires her to check in with the court’s Probation Department until her next court date. Liu is scheduled to appear before Judge Anthony Paradiso in Mineola next Friday, September 29, 2023.

Liu is not the first person allegedly pulling a fast one at the DMV. Brooklyn resident Bin Huang found himself in handcuffs last month after he was accused of lying on the same DMV form. Like Liu, he wasn’t arrested for two years: Brooklyn driver arrested, accused of lying on NYS driver’s license application.
