Astronomers have made a new discovery in Space of a colossal bubble of galaxies that may be a preserved relic from the birth of the universe, commonly known as the Big Bang. According to a published article in Space, this cosmic bubble is called “Ho’oleilana” and is situated approximately 820 million light-years away from Earth and spans an astonishing one billion light-years in width. The name Ho’oleilana derives from the Hawaiian creation chant Kumulipo and signifies the origin of cosmic structure, relating to stars and the moon.
This new discovery in Space is believed to result from the expansion of tiny density fluctuations in the primordial soup of matter that existed at the dawn of the universe. Known as Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAOs), these ripples in density played a fundamental role in shaping the cosmos by giving rise to significant cosmic structures and influencing galaxy distribution. Ho’oleilana represents the first instance of a single structure associated with a BAO, offering a unique insight into the early universe.

The new discovery in Space was made possible by analyzing datasets from Cosmicflows-4, published in 2022, which provide precise distance measurements to galaxies.
