Thousands of Americans across the country will be affected by the new federal food stamp requirements as part of the debt ceiling.
New Federal Food Stamp Requirements
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits or popularly known as Food Stamps have helped millions of American families across the country to meet their daily needs and purchase nutritious food. However, there are many changes that will affect the recipients.
In a published article in KSAT, there are many changes in the new federal food stamp requirements under the debt ceiling. Under the legislation, middle-aged SNAP recipients will need to work to continue receiving the monthly payments this summer.
Additionally, part of the new federal food stamp requirements is mandating the recipients, whose ages are 51 and under, without dependents or disabilities to work at least 80 hours a month beginning in early September to continue receiving the monthly payments or Food Stamps.

Democrats and Republicans Have Opposing Views About the New Federal Food Stamp Requirements
According to a published article in NPR, the Democratic and Republican lawmakers have opposing views about the new federal food stamp requirements. Democratic Rep. Greg Casar said, “Taking some 50- to 55-year-olds off SNAP is just wrong. And it’s nuts to me, that that’s the price that Republicans wanted paid to get the debt ceiling erased.”
On the other hand, Republican Rep. Monica De La Cruz said, “An expanded work requirement for working-age, able-bodied adults is a reasonable condition for receiving SNAP benefits.”
Furthermore, the work requirement does not apply to SNAP or Food Stamp recipients who are experiencing homelessness, military veterans, and adults who age 24 years old and under but were under foster care on their 18th birthday.
