Former Chief of Staff Timothy Mapes is set to undergo a federal trial, closely intertwined with the unfolding Mike Madigan trial as he faces charges on the federal level, commencing this Monday. According to CBS News, the charges stem from allegations that Mapes provided false testimony to a grand jury during its investigation into Mike Madigan trial, who is also set to face trial in the upcoming year. Mapes, aged 68 and hailing from Springfield, faces charges of perjury and attempted obstruction of justice, with jury selection scheduled to kick off at the Dirksen Federal Courthouse, as reported.

According to the report, federal prosecutors contend that Mapes deliberately misled the grand jury regarding his knowledge of Mike Madigan trial’s association with his close associate, Michael McClain, spanning from 2017 to 2019. Despite being granted immunity in return for honest testimony, Mapes allegedly denied his awareness of McClain’s role as an agent or worker for Mike Madigan trial during those years, in contrast to his actual knowledge, as reported. The indictment further suggests that Mapes endeavored to obstruct and influence the Mike Madigan trial investigation.

Timothy Mapes Faces Up to 20 Years in Federal Trial Amid Ongoing Mike Madigan Trial Proceedings

According to Chicago Tribune, should Mapes be found guilty, he could potentially face a sentence of up to 20 years for the attempted obstruction charge and five years for perjury. McClain, a key figure in this case, was previously convicted alongside three others in a federal bribery case involving major utility company ComEd. The group, including former ComEd CEO Anne Pramaggiore, was found guilty on multiple counts of conspiracy, bribery, and falsification of documents. Federal prosecutors alleged that the defendants utilized their influence to reward Mike Madigan trial and his associates over several years, aiming to secure legislative support benefiting ComEd, as reported.

The ongoing legal proceedings also involve Mike Madigan trial and McClain, who are both accused in a bribery scheme that encompasses businesses like ComEd and AT&T.
