MIAMI — An attorney for the family of a 17-year-old boy who was stabbed to death while sleeping in his father’s apartment in Miami’s Icon building claims the suspect was in the building for more than three hours that day and breached every security measure.

As a result, they want to pursue a wrongful death and negligent security case against the building.

According to officials, Dominic Ferrell was slain early on June 8 on the 34th floor of the Icon.

Miami police said officers arrived at the Icon Residences at 2:15 a.m. that morning and discovered the man with multiple stab wounds.

Dominic was pronounced deceased on the scene.

According to police, the suspect, Kyrill R. Kehl, 26, followed two guys into an elevator within the building while they used their key card to reach the 47th level.

According to police, the suspect may have gone down to the 34th level via a stairwell.

According to authorities, Kehl tested numerous door handles before entering the victim’s unlocked unit.

Police say he then stabbed Dominic to death as he was sleeping in his bedroom.

Authorities say surveillance video shows Kehl fleeing the scene following the stabbing.

Officers stated he then entered an adjacent structure that was being built before falling to his death.

Christine Maron, the victim’s mother, told reporters Monday that the building’s safety shortcomings contributed to her son’s death.

“In the early morning hours of June 8th, I lost my 17-year-old son – my first-born child, best friend and best big brother,” Maron told the newspaper. “I lost him in the most tragic and senseless way possible.” No mother or parent should ever have to go through this painful loss. My family is absolutely shattered and broken as we mourn his death and attempt to pick up the pieces.”

Dominic’s mother has recently established a GoFundMe campaign to support a scholarship fund in her son’s name. The money raised will benefit the schools he attended in South Florida and California.
