Teen gunman killed after holding family members hostage in Illinois

A teen gunman has died after authorities say he held members of his own family hostage in Illinois over the weekend.

The incident began Saturday night in Polo, about 100 miles west of Chicago, according to the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office. Officers were dispatched to a home after receiving information that a man had been shot with a handgun.

“Further investigation revealed that a 19-year-old male suspect had shot an occupant and was holding other household members hostage inside the home. Sheriff Brian VanVickle said in a press release that the hostages were able to safely escape the residence before law enforcement arrived.

“The incident is still under investigation.” “There is currently no further threat to the community,” the sheriff added.

The identities of the gunman and victim have not been made public.

VanVickle stated that additional information would be made available “when appropriate.”

The City of Polo issued a statement thanking first responders for their “dedication and professionalism” in dealing with the incident.

“The Polo Police Department, alongside many other law enforcement teams, demonstrated extraordinary commitment in ensuring the safety and security of our residents during an unimaginably difficult situation,” according to the release.

Following the shooting, the Polo Community School District will offer counselling on Monday morning at Polo Community High School.
