Honda recalls more than 259,000 vehicles across the United States due to a brake pedal issue

NEW YORK — Honda is recalling over 259,000 of its vehicles in the United States owing to a problem that might cause the brake pedal to move out of position, thereby interfering with the driver’s ability to stop or slow down.

According to documents issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall includes some Honda Pilots from model years 2023 to 2025, as well as luxury Acura vehicles from 2021 to 2025: Acura TLX and Acura MDX.

The NHTSA recall report states that the brake pedal pivot pin in some of these cars was not correctly fastened during manufacture. According to the research, this can cause the pedal to slip out of position and “may lead to unintended application,” increasing the danger of a crash.

“The issue could also cause an abnormal brake pedal feeling during operation, illuminate the brake malfunction light in the instrument cluster, or cause the vehicle’s brake lights to remain lit even when the brake pedal is not applied,” the American Honda Corporation said in a statement Wednesday.

As a remedy, Honda says authorized dealers will evaluate the cars affected by the recall and, if necessary, repair the brake pedal assembly free of charge. According to the NHTSA study, the firm estimates that 1% of these vehicles have this issue.

Dealer notifications started on June 13. On July 28, owners will get sent notification letters. Meanwhile, drivers can check to see whether their car is included in the recall and get more information at the NHTSA website or Honda’s recall lookup.

According to the NHSTA, Honda received three warranty claims for this issue between February 2024 and June 5, but no injuries were reported.

Honda began examining the malfunctioning brake pedal in April 2024, following a report of a vehicle with this problem. The company eventually established that the brake pedal pivot pin was improperly assembled at a supplier’s US plant, which has since closed. Production was shifted to a Mexican location, where the supplier now uses a video sensor “to verify whether the pivot pin is staked,” according to the recall notice.
