Memphis, Tennessee — A husband and wife are now in custody after police say they shot a woman in the back of the head while firing shots at a security guard who escorted them out of a restaurant for acting “irate” inside.
Jose Montoya, 27, and Judith Ramirez, 26, have been charged with criminal attempt first-degree murder, vandalism $10,000-$60,000, and use of a firearm with intent to commit a felony.
According to officers, on June 15, they were called to Tequila Town Bar on 717 North Whitestation Road for an aggravated assault.
The security guard informed police that the restaurant owner had reported a “irate” man inside the establishment. When the security guard attempted to calm the man down, he became aggressive and was escorted out with his wife.
The man is accused of saying, “Y’all done F* up now” before getting into his car, getting a gun, and shooting at the security guard.
Police say the security guard returned gunfire in self-defense.
During the shooting, police say the man reloaded his firearm several times and continued shooting at the security guard.
The husband and wife left the scene in a gray 2025 Kia Sportage.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a woman shot in the back of the head, and several cars had been hit by gunfire. The woman was transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.
The suspect’s Kia was discovered in the driveway of a home near the airport. They say several spent bullet casings were discovered inside the car, as well as a black and green handgun in the bed of a 2022 Ram pickup truck on the property.
Jose Montoya and Judith Ramirez were both detained inside the home and transported to the Violent Crime Unit office at the time.
According to investigators, Ramirez made contradictory statements during interrogation, while Montoya refused to speak.
A search warrant was issued for the residence where the Kia was discovered. Police say the suspected weapon used in the shooting was discovered there.
Montoya and Ramirez were arrested and charged following the review of video footage from the shooting. They are due in court on Monday morning.
Montoya’s bond has been set at $250,000, while Ramirez’s is set at $300,000.
WREG called Tequila Town Bar for a statement, but they said they had no comment on the situation.
