Cicero, New York — A Cicero police officer was arrested over the weekend after allegedly reporting for duty drunk and then driving his patrol car.
Late Friday, June 13, 45-year-old Officer James Kazmirski was starting his shift at the Cicero Police Department when a colleague suspected he was intoxicated.
The officer contacted a supervisor, who informed the department chief, who then notified New York State Police.
A supervisor stopped Kazmirski in the police department parking lot after he began operating a marked patrol vehicle, according to New York State Police. He was unable to leave the parking lot after moving the vehicle, according to troopers.
When troopers arrived, they noticed “clear indicators of intoxication, including slurred speech, glassy eyes, and the odor of an alcoholic beverage” and arrested him.
Kazmirski agreed to a breathalyzer test, which revealed a blood alcohol level of 0.21%. He was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated.
Cicero Police Chief Steve Rotunno stated that Kazmirski has been with the department for nearly 12 years. Kazmirski has nearly 20 years of experience as a police officer, including time with another agency.
He is currently on administrative leave while undergoing a professional standards investigation.
